そしてそれらは全てaddonsフォルダのmusic.pboかmusic_ew.pboに格納されているので

Interview with Ondrej Matejka, Bohemia’s music composer:
Bioforger (antygry.blox.pl): Could you say a few words on how you started to compose music
generally and – how you became a game music composer? Have you had any personal
examples, who influenced you strongly – teachers, friends, musicians, film/game music
composers?
Ondrej Matejka: My original career goal was to be a flight mechanic, someone who thought music an
oddity for freaks. At the end of the 80s some friends and I founded a Commodore C64 demo group it
was of course necessary that someone from our group will create the music (glory be the SID
chipset!), and because I can draw pretty well it was me who started to create the music :). I found it
interesting after some time and the decision had been made.
Regarding any role models or inspirations or such, I never really thought about it in this way.
Sometimes my ears pick up on the rhythm of the freezer compressor and sometimes I listen to Mozart.
Another composer I admire is G. Mahler. Of course in order to compose music based on the
requirements of my clients I have to have lots of experience and knowledge of many different music
styles. So after the time I've spent composing, maybe it's partly caused by my age, I learned to find
something interesting and to admire in each music style.
What were your inspirations for composing the Operation Flashpoint soundtrack? The
soundtrack seems to be different, more calm and reflective, than in other FPP/TPP war games
of the time (first parts of Medal of Honor, Call of Duty, even Hidden and Dangerous). Was this
soundtrack style inspired mostly by your own earlier works/plans, by any particular artists or
by OFP team of developers and the game itself?
I have always liked change and difference. I'm sure there will be tons of music and certainly perfect
music composed in the future and I don't see any sense composing another clone of Zimmer's music
for example. I think it's much better to go an alternative way. To simply try something different, even if
sometimes it might be something difficult to be understood/listened to by the masses. Marek Spanel
originally wanted something interesting and even though he has directed my hand during composing
he also gave me lots of free space for my own ideas and skills in the final stage which is unbelievably
great and really quite unusual. But as I have mentioned before, I've been inspired by G. Mahler's work
a little bit, during the OFP music creation, I'd even go so far as to say that Mahler's work seems so
ahead of its time to have almost inspired the concept of movie soundtrack before there was even such
a thing as movies!
Was the OFP soundtrack performed using electronics/computers only or were there
parts/samples performed on live instruments, especially for the OFP music? In my
retrospective review of OFP soundtrack I marked a use of “light” wind instruments sounds
(flute, oboe – like in “March hell”), as the hallmark of OFP music – any comments on origins or
inspirations of this element? Do you yourself play any live instrument, a classical one maybe?
Surprisingly I´m focused more on how to handle the transfer of my ideas through to the music editor
(I´m using Cubase 5). With regards to the fact that recording with a real orchestra is too expensive I'm
also trying to trim everything on PCs. Sometimes it's ok to use only one PC, sometimes I have to
connect more PCs to reach the requested computing power. Regarding the usage of "soft tones" I
found the contrast interesting between the rough military environment when people die by a single
bullet and between romantic, almost love tones such as from a flute. I think it's not necessary to hit the
timpani in order to reach a dramatic crescendo. This comes to me from Czech movies of the 60's
where such methods were used with success. Apart from that I'm playing the piano horribly, I'm
playing the guitar horribly and am playing the triangle perfectly!
What in your opinion are the differences in composing game music in the time of OFP and now
– in the time of Arma 2? Any important changes in equipment you and other composers use,
any changes in what developers / gamers require for a game score?
This is a good question. I think there was a very brutal move in the performance and quality of the
sound of music databases. But the most important part is the freakcomposer behind the master
2
keyboard who is striking the tones through to the editor, sometimes using his own head. Regarding the
advance in HW and SW - e.g. the original OFP was created completely on one PC with a HW sampler
EMU E64 (old elite). On the other hand the music for ARMA II was created in a more professional
environment HW and SW, many times using real instruments. Concerning the quality level
requirements of clients and game players, these have grown rapidly. Unfortunately this is also caused
by fact that people are today surrounded by music from all directions and are understanding music
more as a kind of background noise... for that I´m a little sad.
Since OFP, your style seems to have evolved – there was more guitar in Resistance addon
compared to OFP, even more rock riffs in ArmA and 18 Wheels of Steel series, and in Arma 2
there is a lot of different styles – from blues, via rock and electronics, to large orchestral
pieces. What are the main reasons for you to change style of composed music form game to
game and piece to piece – your own aspirations, developer suggestions or maybe general
trends in game music? How much “artistic freedom” have you had in you career as the game
composer?
I always liked diversity. So I really dislike doing something over and over again (I really cannot
understand how someone can write a whole CD with the same theme and repeat it for 60 minutes).
And also because I have been making music for some time now I can rather easily switch from one
music style to another. The wishes of the client are sometimes pretty crazy but that is exactly what I
like. I think that even though in the case of OFP and ARMA2 there were some specifications from
Marek Spanel or Ivan Buchta, in the end I have had really wide liberties on how I grasp the theme.
Concerning the idea, that is really the hardest thing, I hate the situation where after I compose some
theme I find out that I already heard it somewhere. Well there is probably some truth in that everything
was already composed, but man can still come up with interesting compositions or melodies. So I
hope I manage that at least some of the time.
Lastly – what about the future, are you staying with games, with ones developed in Czech
Republic only? Are we going to hear any new pieces of yours in Arma 2: Operation
Arrowhead?
Music for games is a really great thing, because it is an interactive process similar to movie music but
with an advantage/disadvantage that the player’s actions influence when and where the music is
played. That means that the composer must often meet multiple specifications of the client with the
same music. I see my future in continuing to write game music and if luck allows then maybe even
some movie music. If it is possible I would like to make some music even for foreign productions. And
what about ARMA 2 Operation Arrowhead, you ask? Hmm, definitely some Arabic themes and
melodies. This time I am using appropriate ethnic instruments more, but I don't want to be stuck to just
Arabic themes so my favorite orchestrations will be included and I would never forget my really favorite
electric guitar. ;) Well, let yourself get surprised and remember to BUY IT!
I thank Mr Paul Statham (Placebo) of BIS forums and Mr Michal Harangozó of IDEA games for a
help in making this interview possible. It was Michal who translated the original questions into
Czech and the answers into English, contacted Mr Matejka personally and provided additional
information.
Bioforger Warsaw, Poland, 12.2009
Marek Spanel
Ivan Buchta
